VETASSESS has revised the assessment criteria for Divers who require a skills assessment for migration purposes.
Divers will no longer require a certificate-level qualification, with VETASSESS providing a new option for applicants who hold a current ADAS Diver Card and have at least two years of highly relevant employment undertaken in the last five years.
ADAS is the Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme, and its qualification is recognised around the world.
VETASSESS provides skills assessments for Divers who work in occupations involving research, underwater construction and salvage, and in aquaculture.
Employers in these industries recognise the ADAS Divers Card when seeking skilled divers.
Previously, divers seeking to migrate to Australia were required to hold a certificate qualification mapped against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), and this remains an option.
ADAS Executive Director Amanda Sordes says skilled divers are in demand and many divers have wanted to bring their skills to Australia but found that while their skills were highly valued in the industry, they were not recognised for migration purposes.
VETASSESS worked with ADAS to develop the new assessment option, which has been approved by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
VETASSESS Executive Director Rob Thomason says engagement with expert bodies such as ADAS enables VETASSESS to ensure that assessment criteria are fit for the needs of employers within the industry.
“The revised criteria should ensure that more diver applicants with the relevant qualifications and work experience can get a successful skills assessment,” he said.
The change will take effect from 15 August 2022.
Skills assessments for divers
The occupation of diver (ANZSCO 399911) covers occupational divers and is classified by ANZSCO, the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations.
ADAS provides training and certification to occupational divers and has international mutual recognition agreements to ensure training programs are harmonised and divers can have their qualifications recognised.
