Updated skills assessment criteria for hospitality manager occupations

VETASSESS has reviewed and updated its skills assessment criteria for two occupations relating to accommodation and hospitality management, following consultation with the Australian Hotels Association (AHA).

Hotel or Motel Manager

VETASSESS has reviewed and updated its skills assessment criteria for two occupations relating to accommodation and hospitality management, following consultation with the Australian Hotels Association (AHA).

The AHA endorses the VETASSESS skills assessment criteria for the occupations of:

  • Hotel or Motel Manager (ANZSCO code 141311)
  • Accommodation and Hospitality Managers NEC (ANZSCO code 141999)
  • Hotel Service Manager (ANZSCO code 431411).

Accommodation and Hospitality Managers NEC (not elsewhere classified) organise and control the operations of establishments that provide accommodation and hospitality services.

This group covers accommodation and hospitality managers in roles that are not classified elsewhere under the codes developed by ANZSCO (the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) and include Boarding House Manager, Guest House Manager, and Serviced Apartment Manager.

The ANZSCO occupation of Hotel or Motel Manager includes roles such as Hotelier, Publican, Hotel Duty Manager, and Resort Manager. Managers of some levels of serviced apartments can also apply under this category.

Australian Hotels Association Manager Workplace Relations and Culture Peter Wade said serviced apartments are becoming more prominent in the industry, particularly with longer-stay travellers who like the convenience of a kitchen and laundry.

They can range from a basic service to luxury apartments offering 5-star amenities.

In the context of serviced apartments for the occupation of Hotel or Motel Manager, the applicant must be responsible for all aspects of the serviced apartment’s operation, as well as demonstrating knowledge and experience in the following:

  1. An awareness of, and interaction with, body corporate legislation, when applicable.
  2. Demonstrated experience in liaising with numerous individual apartment owners, when applicable.

“Sometimes each apartment is owned by a different investor, so the general manager not only has the management company to deal with, but potentially deals with every individual owner to ensure they remain part of the pool for onselling the accommodation,” said Mr Wade.

To be considered for this occupation, the applicant must be responsible for the management of all divisions or aspects of a motel or hotel’s operations, including housekeeping, security, food and beverage, and accounting and purchasing activities. Mr Wade said the value of having updated criteria and clear processes for assessment was that international accommodation chains could plan staff transfers.

The companies had robust and detailed succession plans and staff development processes and could review the VETASSESS criteria when considering postings to their Australian properties.

VETASSESS Executive Director Rob Thomason said the AHA’s endorsement means managers in the hospitality and accommodation industry can have confidence that their skills assessment for migration to Australia will use the most up-to-date criteria.

“The AHA has the latest knowledge of industry trends and how roles change over time. Their advice enables VETASSESS to keep our skills assessment criteria current so that successful applicants arrive in Australia with the skills needed by local employers.”
