Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMA)

Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMAs) help employers in regional Australia hire a broader range of overseas workers than is available through the standard skilled visa programs.

Providing skilled migrants for DAMA regions in Australia

DAMAs are agreements between the Australian Government and a regional, state or territory authority. They support the unique circumstances and labour market needs of each DAMA region.

At VETASSESS, we assess a number of skilled and semi-skilled occupations under some DAMAs, for overseas workers who intend to migrate to Australia under the DAMA program. These applicants should first have a form of employer offer or sponsorship. Find out more on the Department of Home Affairs website here.

Important Note:

  • Employment used for skills assessment must be at the appropriate skill level and completed within the last five (5) years from the lodgement date.
  • If you have already met the occupation's criteria through either qualifications or employment or a combination of both (as applicable), then employment at the appropriate skill level completed within the last ten (10) years from the lodgement date can be considered for listing on the outcome letter as additional employment.
  • For DAMA assessment, VETASSESS accepts part-time employment on a pro-rata basis to meet occupation requirements. The minimum number of hours per week considered for part-time employment is 20. For example, working 20 hours per week for two years can be considered to meet the requirement of 38 hours per week for one year.

Are you a local employer looking to help fill current skills shortages?

DAMA helps employers in designated regional areas of Australia to sponsor skilled and semi-skilled overseas workers, when other options to employ local staff have been exhausted.

It's an agreement that is designed to help current labour market shortages across Australia.

This supports the economic development of the region and provides an alternative gateway for those looking to migrate to Australia.

Examples of the range of employment evidence that may be produced by applicants include official taxation documents, signed contract documents, appointment letters and official job descriptions.

A statutory declaration cannot be accepted as evidence of your employment dates, position title(s) or as payment evidence - such relevant information should be provided in the form of official documentation.

  • Qualification and employment requirements vary across occupations and DAMAs. Please check the requirements for your occupation with your specific DAMA.
  • Assessments for occupations without DAMA-specific criteria will follow the same assessment process as for full skills assessment applications for migration.
  • Most DAMA occupations are also on the Australian Government’s lists of occupations that are eligible for skilled migration. You may be able to apply for a VETASSESS skills assessment if your occupation is on one of these lists and not exclusive to a DAMA.
