2024 Update: This program has now closed.
VETASSESS is contacting successful applicants who could qualify for a free employability assessment and a referral to subsidised training to help them gain employment at their skill level.
The offer is part of the Australian Government’s Skills Assessment Pilots program to assist onshore migrants to gain work and help fill shortages of skilled labour in priority occupations.
It is aimed at migrants living in Australia and who are working at below their skill level.
Migrants who have received a successful skills assessment from VETASSESS in one of 17 occupations on the priority list can apply for this program if their assessment is dated from 1 January 2019.
The 17 occupations are:
- Agricultural Consultant
- Agricultural Scientist
- Civil Engineering Technician
- Civil Engineering Draftsperson
- Conveyancer
- Corporate Service Manager
- Gymnastics Coach or Instructor
- Internal Auditor
- Marketing Specialist
- Metallurgist
- Orthoptist
- Quality Assurance Manager
- Research and Development Manage
- Shearer
- Swimming Coach or Instructor
- Urban and Regional Planner
- Veterinary Nurse.
The free employability assessment will identify gaps in areas such as literacy, digital skills and communication skills.
Research has found that many skilled migrants are working in jobs below their level of qualifications and experience.
VETASSESS Executive Director Rob Thomason says there is an economic cost when migrants cannot get a job that fully uses their skills.
“This is disappointing for people who have invested in bringing their skills to Australia only to find they cannot fully work to their ability level. It also means the nation is missing out on valuable knowledge and experience, exacerbating skills shortages,” he said.

Important note to potential applicants: VETASSESS can only refer migrants to this program who have received a successful skills assessment from VETASSESS. If you have a skills assessment from another assessing authority, you should contact them.
