VETASSESS launches Recognition of Prior Learning

VETASSESS has launched its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) service for individuals and businesses, in an updated version that allows RPL to be completed online.

The RPL service assesses skills that individuals have acquired through formal and informal learning and workplace experience. It can reduce the amount of training needed for trade apprentices, existing workers and mature age students who can demonstrate relevant experience or skills.

VETASSESS, a specialist in assessment, awards a nationally-recognised qualification, or credits towards a qualification.

The service has launched with assessment services in:

  • Commercial Cookery (Certificates III and IV)
  • Asian Cookery (Certificates III and IV)

Coming soon:

  • Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
  • Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology
  • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology

The qualifications obtained meet the same standards as those acquired through formal learning.

Recognition of Prior Learning is suitable for people who have:

  • Readily available evidence
  • Current skills that are relevant to the qualification
  • Qualifications that have been superseded.

Employers can use RPL to ensure employee skills are up to date and to demonstrate workforce capability and as part of talent management.

VETASSESS Executive Director Rob Thomason says RPL is generally a faster way to gain a qualification than by completing a training course, because it recognises work and life experience.

“The skills we assess are in short supply in Australia and employers want to hire qualified people in these occupations,” he said.

“Many people who are highly skilled do not have a current qualification, or they trained at a time when they did not need a certificate for their job. Recognition of Prior Learning enables their skills to be formally recognised and may assist them to seek promotion or to gain credits for further training.”

Mr Thomason says reports from the Productivity Commission and Victoria’s Macklin Review, released this year, both acknowledge the importance of RPL in encouraging upskilling and lifelong learning.

VETASSESS has a streamlined RPL service to ensure assessments can be done online in stages, in a timely manner and from the convenience of the workplace or home. Applicants are provided with an assessor who has current industry experience and who acts as a mentor to help them understand the evidence required and support their progress towards achieving their qualification.
